Peds Journal Article Summary

During my pediatrics rotation, I came across multiple patients that would come in and be diagnosed with acute otitis media and the prevalence in the pediatric populations is why I decided to discuss this in one of my PICO assignments. Seeing the prevalence of otitis media in the pediatric population I decided to research protective factors against it. One thing that caught my attention was the protective factor that breastfeeding has on otitis media. In this meta analysis and systematic review, evidence was com[ared on whether there was an association between duration of exclusively breastfeeding and the risk of acute otitis media. Twenty four articles were included, and came to the conclusion that breastfeeding protects against AOM until 2 years of age, but protection is greater for exclusive breastfeeding and breastfeeding of longer duration.Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months reduces the likelihood of experiencing acute otitis media (AOM) by approximately 43% within the first 2 years of life. However, beyond 2 years old, there is insufficient evidence to support breastfeeding as protective against AOM, due to limited and low-quality studies on the subject.
