FM Journal Article Summary

For the management of acute bronchitis, we know that the use of antibiotics is not advised, but I wanted to take a look at research including recovery time, adverse effects, resistance etc that were taken into place when making this decision. In this systematic review, we are looking at RCTs of patients being treated with antibiotics vs placebo for acute bronchitis.  Results at the follow ups included no significance in participants being clinically improved between antibiotics vs placebo but patients prescribed antibiotics were seen to have shorter mean cough duration. Patients with antibiotics were reduced in days feeling ill and participants were more likely to be improved according to clinician’s global assessment. Noting that many of these were not significant enough to be clinically beneficial. There was a significant increase towards adverse effects noted in the antibiotic group.Overall, there is evidence that antibiotics can help with improvement but we have to take in other considerations such as side effects, increased resistance and cost of antibiotics. With such minimal benefits noted, the benefits do not seem significant enough for the cost.
